Wax Coated Paper Cups
Wax Paper cups have been discontinued by most manufactures for over 10 years, in the early days of paper cups, the cup was glued together and then but through a machine that sprayed wax on both the inside and the outside, this prevented the liquid inside soaking into the board, and condensation on the outside of the paper cup soaking into the board.
There were many disadvantages to this production method for cold drink paper cups.
Wax although a stable / inert material, that is completely safe as a food contact material, when heated it was very dangerous within the production process.
Waste material and wax paper cups could not be recycled.
Images printed on the board, e.g. branding, became dull once sprayed with wax.
Wax cups are completely unsuitable for hot drinks, as the wax would melt.
Customers would sit and scrape the wax off with their nails!!!!
The modern day product is Double Poly Coated Board (PE)
